The Queen of Hearts is a popular costume, taken from the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. While the Queen of Hearts in the story is a foul tempered and often angry character, it’s fun to take the costume to a different level and wear a sexy version of what the Queen might have been if she hadn’t been so busy threatening everyone with the loss of their head.
The character – and so, the costume – are based on the Queen of Hearts from a pack of playing cards. Along with her husband, the King of Hearts, she rules Wonderland, and everyone trembles under her cruel reign.
While these days the Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen are used interchangeably, they are in fact two different characters, although both from Alice’s adventures. The Red Queen came from the later book, Through the Looking-Glass, and instead of a playing card, she is based on a chess piece. The differences are subtle but clear – the Queen of Hearts is a violently angry and dangerous woman, while the Red Queen is a different kind of danger – calm and cold. Think of a chess piece which must follow strict rules of movement.
Of course, in the Tim Burton “Alice” movie, the Queen was called the “Red Queen” but was based more on the Queen of Hearts. Even in the earlier Disney movie, some of the Red Queen’s lines are attributed to the Queen of Hearts.
